Trines

We tend to think of trines as comfortable aspects. The trine implies an ease of expression, but when it comes to interpreting trines, the jury is still out. A Sun-Mars trine for example, generally indicates abundant confidence. Those with many trines in their charts seem to have more than their fair share of good luck and opportunities, though there can be a tendency to waste these gifts in the pursuit of fun and excitement or through laziness or apathy. In her book Retrograde Planets, Erin Sullivan points out that a Sun-Mars trine is a ‘most deceptive aspect’ and that it ‘produces a stubbornness which is not usually associated with trine aspects.’ 24 This is because Mars is slow when trine the Sun and not far from stationary.

Nor is it clear how Venus-Mars trines operate. There appears to be a wide spectrum of responses to this aspect. For instance, in this group we find screen legend Greta Garbo, who for many years lived a virtual hermit’s existence, yet we also find Errol Flynn, who was married three times and had a reputation for wild living and numerous sexual conquests. In 1942 two under-age girls accused Flynn of statutory rape. Flynn was acquitted, but the incident boosted his playboy reputation, leading to the expression ‘in like Flynn.’ 25
